Aussie Slang: Introduction

top-aussie-slang

One of the biggest requests I get from people is to teach them some Aussie slang. The Australian accent takes a while to get used to, but the more difficult thing is to understand is the different vocabulary that we have down here.

In less than 200 years, our ancestors from the bush have somehow shortened traditional English into a collection of words that is very unique to our country, and to the foreigner, this dialect will seem rather lazy!

However, a lot of Australian slang words that you may hear in movies are not actually used often in Australia! Most of the time they are used only in movies to differentiate our culture from Americans or British. I don’t want to teach unnecessary vocabulary that won’t help you, but for those who do wish to travel here one day, I want you to be prepared for some of the more commonly used phrases and words that you might hear around the place.

This is the first post in my Aussie slang series, and you can bet that there will be more!

Comment below with any other Aussie slang that you have heard!
